  Row Boat
This painting was inspired by the reflections in the water. The exercise was to realistically represent deep waster and the fabric of the Lakeland rowing boat.
I spent quite some time masking out the boat and painting the water first. The masking then was removed and the boat painted. The reflection of the boat was painted over the blue wash of the water so giving it a blue haze which added to the realistic effect of water.

  Ullsewater Sunset
Painted as an exercise in graded washes for the sky and reflections and then the trees in silhouette as would be in late evening in the lakes.
The reflections were painted into a soft sheen of water for a slight wet in wet effect.
Now owned by my wife.

  Reflect on the Day
This is a panoramic format and is based on some trees from Ullsewater Sunset. The mountain mist and sunset are from my minds Eye but again the colors in the sky and reflections throughout give a harmony and the dark trees are balanced by the darker mountain. Stronger colours for the forground and lighter tones for the distance enhances the Arial perspective.

  Holy Trinity
This painting is of the clock tower of Holy Trinity Church in Warrington. It was painted for the Edwin Allen Cup in 2005 which was a painting competition for scenes of Warrington. It achieved a second place and a commendation. The judges particularly liked the clean colours.

  Summer Lane
This painting depicts the warm summer days in the countryside and makes use of the tree shadows to emphasis the perspective in the painting. The lane leads the eye down a journey that you could almost walk into and intrigues the mind into a wonder of what is round the corner. As a painting by Terry Harrison.

  Down By The River
The use of trees again allows the depiction of shadows and the emphasis of perspective. The gap in the trees in the background also allows for the reflections to be painted more realistically. As a painting by Terry Harrison

  The Mooring
Another chance to depict reflections and water. The use of the silver birch and their branches reaching over the pond frames the view in the distance. Finally the rowing boat in the foreground give a centre of attention which finishes the painting off. As a painting by Terry Harrison

  The Farmers Gate
How often have I been through the lake district and come across a scene like this one. It has all the elements to lead the viewer on a journey through the painting. You start with the path and go through the gate, on to the farm then the eye dances to the mid distance houses of the village beyond and then on to the stunning view and the distant hills on the horizon. As a painting by Terry Harrison

  The Way Home
Another typical woodland view with the use of the tree shadows to vive perspective. I used burnt sienna to paint the brown foliage of the scrub and the path lads the eye on to the bright area beyond the dark of the wood.

  Round the Bend
This painting was a study of a painting by Thomas Moore. I was inspired by the distance beyond the trees where there is little more than colour and the eye seems to imagine detail that is not really there

  Bluebell Wood
As a painting by Terry Harrison and so he must take all credit for this painting. This was a direct copy but inevitably there we differences. This version has much stronger colour. It was painted during a period of study of his styles.

  Country Style
One of the classic Terry Harrison exercises done during the early months, but a pleasing composition. This painting is a great demonstration of the use of shadows to depict a real feel. Given to my mother in law as she fell in love with it.

  Grassmere Cottage
This painting was taken from a photo on my honeymoon where this cottage is just up the hill from Wyke cottage near Grassmere, on the road to Elterwater. The texture of the slate buildings in this area is interesting to paint and allows great detail to be included.

  Snowy Lane
This picture was from a photo of a Kent lane. Permission from the photographer was granted and the painting strongly emphasises light and shadow contrast to give winter low sun and the shadows that come with it. I used masking fluid for the fence posts and afterwards glazed with a weak mix of raw sienna for the sunlight and then olive green with burnt umber for the shadows on the posts. The snow laden wires of the fence were masked out and then washed in with the raw sienna mix.

  Safe Harbour
Based on one of the Bretton Boats. I was inspired by the rust trails down the side of the boat and the strong colours of the buoys on the boat.
Taken from a photo by Angus McIntyre and with Kind permission.

  Mountain Sunset
A simple enough painting depicting an emphasis of the colours in the sky by a contrast in the darkness of the mountains. Towards the top of the sky the darkness of Ultramarine graduates into dark tint so as to balance the darkness of the mountains. Finally a few twinkling stars pull through the darkness of the sky, as day moves to night.

  Evening Time
An attempt to depict the contrasting colours of the late evening sky with the strong colours and brightness of a sunset. The reflections in the water were the inspiration and the reproduction of a photographic effect called ghosting which produces the glare of the red colour bleeding over the distant hills on the horizon.

  Transition
This painting was done in a hotel room in Oxford. The scene is a version of reflect on the day but from memory and using a different colour range. It was painted to use up some time during the evening away from home.

  Seaset
The reflections of the sunset contrast with the silhouette of the fishing boat returning to harbour after a long days fishing. The colour range of the sunset is reflected in the sea water of the harbour and elements from the top of the painting are echoed lower down giving a balance and the colours throughout giving harmony.
  Size:        19cm x 13.5cm

  Harbour Sketch
The study of a sky in storm was the inspiration for this painting. Quite a limited pallete with earth colours and just a hint of the sunshine suggested in the sky. Painted as a sketch to try out panoramic format paper.

Medium     Water Colour
Price          £150
  Window
A study of the way that light falls on a window and white wooden cladding in strong sunlight.
The effect is enhanced by the use of a blind half closed on the inside which allows the description of the shadows of the window frame which enhances the three dimensional effect.
  Size:          36cm x 25cm

  Braking Storm
This painting was a follow up to "After the storm" and again was inspired by the depiction of a sunset. The Silver birch on the left frame the distance and hold the viewers attention.

  Slater's Bridge
The study of a sky in storm was the inspiration for this painting. Quite a limited pallete with earth colours and just a hint of the sunshine suggested in the sky. Painted as a sketch to try out panoramic format paper.

  Betws-y-Coed Bridge
This painting is a view under the bridge in the middle of Betws-y-Coed in Wales over the river Conwy. I used a very restricted pallet to emphasise the light and dark contrast and the changes in water texture from foam to smooth. The cool colours emphasise the winter feel.
  Size:          25cm x 20cm
Medium     Water Colour

  Sunset cliffs
This painting was again inspired by a sunset and the cliffs in silhouette. The texture of the sea was depicted by a combination of dry brush technique for the blue and wet in wet for the merging to dark.
  Size:          36cm x 25cm
Medium     Water Colour
Price          £150
  The Boat Trip
The trees were painted with Terry Harrison brushes and frame the boats. The beach was very dark but is helped by the dappled sunlight breaking up the area and the reflections of trees on the right (wet in wet) and the sky on the left (dry brush) adding colour range.

  Stream in the woods
Originally inspired by  a Terry Harrison painting but many tree changes, flower changes and reflection changes have made this different in most respects.

  After The Storm
This painting was inspired by the interesting contrast of strong sunlight in a warm sunset against the dim tones of a dusk time in a wooded area. The storm clouds in the distance enhance the strength of the sun and the centre of interest.

Medium     Water Colour

  Derwent Launch
Again inspired by a calendar image and visits to the place not far (by boat)  from the famous Ashness bridge. A great chance to show a moody sky and flat water with reflections painted with wet in wet.
  Size:          25cm x 20cm
Medium     Water Colour

  Narrow Boat
This painting was of a canal at Parbold. a good exercise in depicting water and the changing of the scene to enhance the composition. Originally there was another narrow boat across the middle distance and some figures on the towpath that just didn't fit. I also added the daffs in the foreground so as to add colour and detail in the front to help the Arial perspective. Trees in the foreground helped to frame the picture and hold the viewers eye in frame.

  Spitfire
Originally an exercise in depicting distant fields with a Terry Harrison technique but then I thought the view was like that from an aeroplane and so the adding of a subject like a Spitfire diving through frame  made the composition.

Medium     Water Colour

  Kissing Gate
An adaptation of Bridal path with a more restricted pallet and leaning toward the yellow side of the colour wheel, showing low strong sunshine and a different type of style.

  Red Berries
From a study of Dawn McLeod Heims book Painting realistic water colours. This was one of my first watercolours and was before I knew what watercolour paper was. Unfortunately this meant that cartridge paper compromised the background wash.

  Old Tractor
During a study period of Terry Harrison taken from the book a brush with water colour.
I like the free style and vignette finish to the sketch. This and the Water Pump are examples of sketches that you should collect in a sketch book for inclusion in paintings when something is missing and you want to add some interest. Be careful not to conflict with the centre of interest.
